day 5

(day 5) 5/12/08
today we started in the work shop with 7 of us selected to install and remove doors single and doubles. i was chosen to be one of the people so we got crakin on our single doors straight away. it was a normal door with a strip of pine down either side witch we plained to suit the door frame once we did that we marked were our hinges were going and chiseled the slots out the screwed the hinges on and just hang the door. then we drilled a door hanled hole and fixed in the door handles. then just before lunch we started on our double doors wich is very simular to the single just hanging one in the oppisite way and making sure they both matched ideticly then fit small door handles and done then came did some blogging.

today we started in the workshop were we were to carry on with our window frame project were we were up to doin the interier wich we got some thin mdf to represent the gyprock the we fixed some chock blocks around the frame that had to be 10 mm of the actual window frame the i made my window sill were checked out the ends so it can be slid into the frame then routed the edges then lightly sanded fixed it in then it was only the arcatrave to be placed around then it was finished then after lunch we came to the computer room to complete our blogs.

install and replace window frames

(day 2) 2/12/08
today we started of in the class room to fill out a carpantry fixing out booklet wich we learnt about skirtings, window sils, scotia, arcatrave and how to install all these. in the book we had to work out how much scotia , skirting and arcatrave would be required by lookin at 2 houses plans. in the book we also discussed mitre joins and difffernt ways to join using scribes. then after lunch we made our way to the workshop to start on our window frame project were we were givin a small wall frame with a window hole in it then we were givin a small window frame and given the task to install it. we first started with brown paper over the frame to represent sisalation then we tacked fourt pieces of weather board on the 4 edges of the frame the put the window frame in and square it all up then i nailed it in. the we placed alcor around the edges of the frame then weather boarded all the way around the frame completing the out side part of the window.

explosive power tools

(day 1) 1/12/08
today is our first day back at tafe we started in the class room and did a work book called install and replace windows were we learned about bricks the different types and sizes the standard brick is 76mm high 11omm wide and 230mm long we learnt about perp joins and different styles of courses the most common is a half bond. wall ties are very inpotant for strucual strength we learnt how to tying down the roof we also leant about brick veneer houses we also learnt about the uses of cavitys - prevent water, prevents heat, widens wall space. then we moved into the window and door instalation windows have always hav to be installed plumb and square and make sure there is no wind. with doors hinges are very important they range from 150 mm to 50 mm hinges are made up of leaves and the knukle. then after lunch we moved down to the work shop area to do a explosive power tools lesson were we filled out the exercise book with the lecturer once we did that we all went out side and had a crack at fireing the hilti gun then made our way back inside to do a short assesment witch every one passed.
